Background Radiation 2/3/2017

This is my weekly roundup of the background radiation I am exposed to. It’s usually the bad and ugly of how the world treats LGBT folks, with a heavier emphasis on the T’s. I like to leave the full links exposed because then you can see where the article is.

I am a big news consumer, and here’s what got my drawers in a knot this week.

Background Radiation

Headline: Advice for Gay and Transgender Travelers

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/27/travel/advice-for-gay-and-transgender-travelers.html?_r=0

This comes up for my husband and I regularly. When you travel and are anywhere on the LGBT spectrum, you have far more to take into account than a straight cisgendered person. We work for a federal agency with opportunities around the world, but are not able to take advantage of those for the most part. This geographical awareness when you are gay or trans even includes areas of the US for us. I’d prefer to stay in my coastal liberal paradise because there is a reduced chance of dealing with discrimination and violence that way.

Headline: “Administration-Related Changes” Lead To Delay In A Key Transgender Rights Case

https://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/administration-related-changes-lead-to-delay-in-a-key-transg?utm_term=.usN0D6gD8#.hoVJNPeNg

The crux of it is that EEOC had a very pro-LGBT stance, and was pursuing cases of anti LGBT discrimination, but that might reverse with the Trump administration. In this gals case, the HRC is stepping in for her, but I’m not sure where that leaves everyone else that needs the EEOC.

Headline: Transgender ex-squaddie targeted by cruel bullies would reverse sex-swap op to escape living hell

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/transgender-ex-squaddie-targeted-cruel-9718234

This is not someone who thinks they aren’t transgender anymore, but that the abuse they suffer for being transgender is so pervasively ongoing, and violent, that she just wants it to stop. She’s not the first person I’ve heard of that faced this kind of abuse without support for being transgender. It’s horrifying that the public contains more than a few people who seem to take glee in attacking people for being trans.

Headline: Transgender Americans rush to change IDs for Trump era

http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/31/health/transgender-gender-change-id/index.html

I think everyone that can, is rushing to get things done. The Group Health caseworker I talked to when I was organizing things to get on the long waitlist for bottom surgery, says she has an unprecedented number of people attempting to access transgender services in the last few months. It’s why I started the process. If access to surgeons wasn’t a long wait, I’d do this tomorrow, and get it rolling before I have to worry about my insurance being cut off. I see the chit chat on my usual FTM sites, and name changes, and other changes are a hot topic. There is such a feeling of urgency that our legal ability to change our documents, get access to hormones or surgery will be whittled down or outright denied.

Change in surgery plans

In the following post I know I will use the term “we” and it’s a bit like in a heterosexual relationship the guy says “we are pregnant”. However, it is hard not to think of it as we so I thought I would admit the hypocrisy up front.were-pregnantWolsey and I have been talking about pushing through his bottom surgery sooner than we originally were going to do it. He wasn’t sure if and when he wanted it, and with having just finished his top surgery we figured we had time to wait.

surgeryscarsequaltattoosWith the current political climate, and the election of Trump we have gotten more concerned about coverage for him. Since we work for the Department of Defense and I had to push through the EEO up to the pentagon in 2015 for his coverage, we know that his benefits are always up in the air.

Last week we decided to push forward with it by setting up the consult and starting with the wait list. With Trump elected we couldn’t be sure that he wouldn’t repeal the LGBTQ protections that are currently in place. SCOTUS hasn’t made an official ruling and with the repeal of the ACA (Obamacare) we didn’t want to take a chance. Just to be clear, the DoD and DCAA have not indicated a problem, but they are a conservative military agency/department under Donald Trump, Fascist in charge.

199t2zWe called his surgeon and the consult will be in Phoenix, meaning a 3-hour flight to get to it (plus flying twice more for surgery). The surgeon said the earliest we can consult is in May. We were expecting that, what we weren’t expecting is that surgery itself won’t happen until 12-18 months after the consult, closer to the 18 month specifically.

We were both shocked by the wait. We attempted to find a second surgeon, this one was in Portland and a lot closer. It was even worse; the consult wouldn’t be until September and at least a year after that before surgery.

This did cause both of us some anxiety. We weren’t sure if our protections would still be in place in that time so we talked to Wolsey’s insurance contact. She is going to see if she can get the surgeons to speed up a little.

I then asked our contact if I went back to the state as an employee (they use the same insurance) if that would interfere with Wolsey’s surgery and she reassured it wouldn’t. This means we do have a backup plan that if they strip his ability to use the insurance I will jump back to the state after August and keep our insurance going.my-resume-is-just-a-list-of-things-i-really-5864634The reason August is a magic date is I will hit my three-year anniversary and I will be considered a federal employee permanently so in the future I will get preference if I ever apply for feds again.

The irony of this situation is five hours after we are pushing forward with this, an Executive Order repealing Obama’s protections for LGBTQIA is circulating and that is hitting the news now. I really don’t even know what to say except Fuck you Trump!

How President Trump made me look at Dick Pics

I’m sure you’d have to be living under a rock to not notice the upheaval going on in the United States. It’s on every news channel, every social media feed, and even websites that normally avoid politics are covering it.

I wanted to take a few moments to discuss how Trumps administration is effecting me, and by extension my husband. We are being deeply effected, not in a philosophical way, but in a very real concrete fashion.

I get my insurance through the Department of Defense, who only in the beginning of 2016 dropped an insurance rider preventing care for transgender people. This rider meant if they could related any medical care you get to your status as transgender, they will deny coverage. Full stop.

Transgender Healthcare

In theory, this would just stop coverage for therapy, hormones, and surgery, but it’s much more insidious in practice.

This is when we come to something the community calls “Transgender Broken Arm Syndrome.” It’s when you go to the ER for a broken arm, or anything emergency, but the doctor finds out you are transgender, and then immediately tells you that your pain and suffering, are all caused by your status as trans.

Broken Arm Kitten

This isn’t hyperbole, or hypothetical. This is a real possibility for transgender people. If the doctor you end up with is even willing to see you, they might decide that every issue you have is related to your being transgender because they are bigoted assholes. Then the bill goes to your insurance that way, and you get denied coverage.

tiredofyourshit

The current administration is not LGBT friendly, and some of the ACA (also known as Obamacare) contains protections from things like pre-existing conditions, and regulations prevent discrimination on the basis of gender identity. They are already trying to remove those.

repeal-aca

I get my insurance from the Department of Defense, and am literally a pen stroke away from having transgender care stricken off my coverage. If that happens, I have to risk facing Transgender Broken Arm Syndrome if I go in for things that are not even related to being transgender. It’s a two-for of delight, really. . .

My original plan for my transition had me waiting a couple of years, before deciding on what I wanted for bottom surgery. I had top surgery a year ago, and I felt spacing major surgeries out by a couple years would be for the best.

However, in this climate, I have been making calls, and seeking Group Health approvals for stepping that timeline to this year. We are talking in the next 11 months.

Additionally, my insurance goes through Dr. Meltzer in Scottsdale, AZ, and that adds a whole dimension of air travel and hotels to the process. The doc requires two letters from therapists, one of which has to be a Phd. (Seriously?!)

Gatekeepers

Bottom surgery isn’t a one size fits all process for transgender men. There are all sorts of things that you can opt for. You have to decide what you want to keep, if you want to build a bigger better dick, or just elevate what testosterone gave you. Do you want to stand to pee, or are you okay sitting to do that. There are options for all of it. This can mean 2-4 surgeries for even the most simple selections.

Cat Penis Tail

I feel fairly lucky that I was a nurse for close to ten years, because I have the medical background to really dig in and sort out what I want. I am looking at the “easier and simpler” options, but that still comes up with between 6-7 separate procedures spread out between 2 separate surgeries.

I would have liked to have had more time, but if I don’t leap now, I might not be able to afford it later.

Hilariously, I have spent a month looking at penises. Specifically transgender men’s penis’ on sites like Transbucket to help research what I want done. Thankfully I am medically trained enough to be able to wade through post op pictures and see what I need to make up my mind.

Oscar Mayer

This is how this new administration effects my husband and I. We are diverting all our resources towards making this happen, rather than spread this out over the next few years, and I am have been staring at post op dick pics for four weeks.

I am blessed to be in love with a man that is okay with throwing all our resources at this, but it doesn’t change the fact that we shouldn’t have to do things this way.

To be fair, I’d have had to look at that many dick pics eventually, but thanks to the Trump administration I’ve been doing it all right now.

Background Radiation 1/27/17

This is my weekly roundup of the background radiation I am exposed to. It’s usually the bad and ugly of how the world treats LGBT folks, with a heavier emphasis on the T’s. I like to leave the full links exposed because then you can see where the article is.

I am a big news consumer, and here’s what got my drawers in a knot this week.

Background Radiation

Headline: Philly commission finds racism in Gayborhood, recommends training for bars, Mazzoni

http://www.phillyvoice.com/philly-commission-find-racism-in-gayborhood-recommends-training-for-bars-mazzoni/

I don’t think this is isolated to Philly. I think there has always been a slant towards white, cis, and male in gay spaces. I also think it’s super easy for folks that range from implicit bias to outright racist to step up racist behavior in the current political climate.

Mostly this bothers me because we can do better than this. These are our people, and we can’t be accepting of this kind of behavior in our own circles.

Headline: A trailer for Michelle Rodriguez’s controversial gender reassignment action film is here

http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/01/25/a-trailer-for-michelle-rodriguezs-controversial-gender-reassignment-action-film-is-here/

Here’s what plot there is. A male agent is kidnapped, forcefully transitioned to female, and then sent out to do his job, and probably wreak some revenge in the process. . .

Those more eloquent than I have railed on about how truly fucked up this movie is. It’s another implication that all transgender women are just men in drag. It’s a horror show of badly portrayed transgender issues.

What gets me is Rodriuez’s doubling down on the idea that the role she plays is fine, and not problematic because she’s like, bisexual, and that means she’s one of us, you know? To paraphrase her quote. She used to be one of my favorite action stars of all times, but now I know she’s a person that doesn’t care if she hurts other people, and I’m not into her at all now.

Headline: Controlling mother sues to block her estranged daughter getting transgender treatment

http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/01/26/controlling-mother-sues-to-block-her-estranged-daughter-getting-transgender-treatment/

I’ve been following this for a while. The daughter is 17, and had been completely legally estranged from her mother for several years. Then the daughter started to transition at 17, and the mother, accused of abuse, swooped in to try and stop her.

Here is a link to where you can hear the daughters point of view: http://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/minnesota-transgender-teen-sued-her-own-mom-speaks-out-n712616

The girl has had her own apartment, and a full time job since 16, and is graduating high school despite being on her own. Her mother has a substance abuse issue, was abusive when the girl came out as gay at 13, amongst the more typical neglect that comes with substance abuse.

I have to admit a bias here because I come from a very screwed up background and had my own job and apartment at 16. I wasn’t able to get it together enough to graduate high school, and chose to get a GED instead. So this girl is impressive in my opinion.

This lawsuit wouldn’t be happening if the ‘Minnesota Child Protection League’ wasn’t fronting the lawsuit. It’s actually not even about us transgender folks, as it’s a backdoor way to get some anti-abortion precedents on the books to stop minors from gaining access to abortion, or birth control without parental involvement. You can tell because this girl is 17 and will undoubtedly be a legal adult before it’s all said and done, and out of her mothers reach.

It is particularly horrifying how people try to reach in and completely destroy transgender people for no other reason than they can, though.

Let’s just do a roundup of the legislative fiasco’s because there are so very many:

Headline: The White House’s LGBT rights page has disappeared

https://techcrunch.com/2017/01/20/the-white-houses-lgbt-rights-page-has-disappeared/

That’s not a good sign. . .

Headline: Doctors say repealing the Affordable Care Act would devastate the trans community

https://qz.com/890149/doctors-say-repealing-the-affordable-care-act-would-devastate-the-transgender-community/

I am one of those folks that is at risk. I get my insurance through a federal agency that only dropped it’s anti-transgender rider in 2016. I’m rushing into consultations and more surgery this year in case the rider is reinstated. I have no idea if I will have healthcare in 2017.

Headline: States Stand in Line to Enact Anti-Transgender Bathroom Bills

http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/States-Bathroom-Legislation/2017/01/21/id/769745/

They listed the states trying to enact bathroom bills.

Headline: Transgender Rights Are Under Attack in These 11 States

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2017/01/transgender-rights-bathrooms-state-legislature-texas-arizona-wyoming-kansas

Here is another list of states trying to legislate bigotry.

I know there is a lot this week, but I feel like every time I open my feed I am under siege. Trump’s inauguration marked an unprecedented chaotic fiasco in US politics, and he and his cabinet have leveled their sites at LGBT folks, amongst their targets. I’m going to drink a lot of hot chocolate, and call my reps as needed in the long months to come.

This site: 5 Calls https://5calls.org

This site will make it easy to call your reps, and let them know they better be fighting for you. We already know they listen to phone calls, so even if you hate phones, in fifteen minutes you can make a difference.

We have to fight. We can’t go back to the way things were.

Family Trees

I can tell that both Wolsey and I are getting old. Last week Wolsey and I decided we wanted to work on our family trees. Both of us only know scattered things about our families, since both of our fathers are the black sheep of their respective families.

funny-old-man-meme-you-know-you-are-growing-old-when-happy-is-a-nap-image We ended up looking around at the different options noticing that they are all similar. We have settled on Ancestry.com for now. We noticed as we started our accounts that there is nowhere in the program set up for name changes. Wolsey has changed his name multiple times, and not just in transition related events.

family-tree_o_215105

I plan on adding Lucky to my actual name since almost no employer would ever know who my real name is. You can definitely use a “life event” but it doesn’t look like you can display multiple names. Now, if a family tree program/system doesn’t have a way to track and display multiple names, you know what they can’t track as well?

Yes, gender designation changes are not supported in ANY program that we have seen. You can add it as a life event, but it’s just text, no searchable parameters and no display capabilities.

That was so frustrating it hurts. Thinking about it now I should have realized they wouldn’t support being able to change your gender designation. It seems like such a little thing. I could change any database program to allow someone to do that, it really shouldn’t be very hard for them to do.

i-canfix-it I realize transition and transgender people for the media and popular culture are a relatively new thing to accept. However, I would have really thought a family tree program would be able to support such a thing. It isn’t unknown in history, even if the person themselves aren’t transgender there have been women who served in the military designated as male (many women volunteered to fight in the American Civil War as one example).

albert-d-j-cashier

You would have thought you could track a person’s gender designation just so you can tie official documentation to that person, such as the military paperwork of a person designated as male, to the woman that their other documentation would show.

I am definitely not saying it’s the same thing for someone who presented as something to join the military is the same thing as being transgender. I had just assumed since it was already popularly accepted that those incidents occurred that they would already have something for identifying different gender designations for the same person over time.

I have already submitted an “old man” email/message to Ancestry.com explaining what their system is lacking and a suggestion they update it. I know I won’t hear anything back, but I just have to keep tilting at all the windmills.

grumpy-old-man-serial-complainer I just felt I had to share my frustration with all of you.

Background Radiation 1/20/17

This is my weekly roundup of the background radiation I am exposed to. It’s usually the bad and ugly of how the world treats LGBT folks, with a heavier emphasis on the T’s. I like to leave the full links exposed because then you can see where the article is.

I am a big news consumer, and these are just a small sampling of what’s been going down in the past week.

Background Radiation

Okay, I can’t even today, so here is the quick and dirty round up of things I saw this week that made me want to pull my hair out. It’s not much, but it’s all I see on my feeds. There are dozens of articles all pointing to the same things, so here are the sources I favor.

Headline: Inauguration day: How President Trump could undermine trust in vaccines

http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2017/01/20/inauguration-day-how-president-trump-could-undermine-trust-in-vaccines/

This was also covered in the Skeptics Guide to the Universe podcast #601

http://www.theskepticsguide.org/podcast/sgu/601

They go over the ugly issues surrounding the new Trump presidency and how that will work with basic skepticism, and anti-vaccination quackery getting a boost.

Headline: Pastor who claims gays caused ‘moral 9/11’ preaches at Trump’s inauguration

http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/01/20/pastor-who-claims-gays-caused-moral-911-preaches-at-trumps-inauguration/

This is probably the tip of the iceberg. If you accept LGBT folks as equals that should be treated respectfully as human beings, you don’t have a hate filled pastor at your inauguration.

Headline: The Future Is Disappearing: Trump Administration Deletes WhiteHouse.Gov References to Climate Change, Civil Rights, Healthcare, LGBT Issues

http://www.themarysue.com/the-future-is-disappearing/

It’s not even 24 hours and they’ve ripped the Advancing LGBT workplace rights off the US government website. . .

I don’t have a lot of hope here. I get my insurance through a federal agency, and one stroke of a pen means I no longer have medical coverage. I am hoping this disaster isn’t as fast moving as it looks, because I have a couple more surgeries on the horizon, and it would be nice if I could get it done. I’ve already moved my timeline up by a couple years because of all this.

In closing, let’s look at this next article.

Headline: The top 50 successful transgender Americans you should know

http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2017/01/top-50-successful-transgender-americans-know/

It’s nice to see what others in the community are doing. Here are some successful and cool transgender folks.

In the end, we will get through this. We survived up until this point, and it took a lot of fighting to get here. We just have to be diligent, and not let our guard down. It doesn’t matter if it’s every hour, but when they try to take away our rights, shove us back in the closet, or harm us, we have to raise the alarm. We have to.

Bad Old Lady!

It happened, it finally happened!

ooooh-it-just-happened

Wolsey got misgendered for the first time in over a year and a half. It wasn’t even because he “looked” like a woman, but because of heteronormative society expectations.

We ended up having to go to the pharmacy and it was packed. When I say packed, I mean there were 11 of us sitting in the waiting area with 10 chairs and we waited for 40 minutes (others had been there over 90). While we were sitting there, an older lady came and sat near us.the-sign-outside-4cza3m I should have known it wouldn’t go well, the first thing out of her mouth was how phones are destroying our society and our interaction. If this was online, I would have used my meme showing people in the 1950s ignoring each other and reading papers. However, it wasn’t meant to be as I couldn’t just whip a meme at her.

img_2621

After a while of forced conversation by her I started talking back. I knew it was going downhill fast when she started talking about Trump, and how people now won’t admit they voted for him. She repeated this multiple times. A short time later she then went on to quote some Trump stuff while saying she didn’t vote for him. She was excited that ACA was going away because she made too much money to use it and she was frustrated that she was left out. I can’t even imagine someone being joyful that other people are being thrown off of medically necessary treatment because you make too much money.

healtchare

The old lady looked at me and asked if “you and her” voted for Trump. She half nodded at Wolsey. I immediately laughed and said not even close. It took me a second to realize she had misgendered Wolsey. Then I got angry, but before I could say anything, Wolsey blurted out “I am way too gay to vote for Trump”. He hadn’t noticed the gendering issue.

mudbloodgay

The old lady had noticed her mistake. She looked over at Wolsey and froze. This is when I realized she had never looked at Wolsey directly and didn’t realize he was a guy. She had just assumed because Wolsey is much smaller than me, and had assumed someone sitting so close to me must have been a woman. Wolsey’s very masculine haircut and beard were a clear indicator that he was not a woman. Evidently heteronormative society had not prepared the evil old lady that she might meet “the gays” at the pharmacy.

oops_sign

She shut up right there and didn’t say a word to us after that. She was freaking out we were a gay couple. It took all my effort not to laugh at her right there. Both Wolsey and I brought up gay issues a couple of times. I was not my better self and was enjoying antagonizing her. I wish I could say I wouldn’t do that again, but that would be a lie.

Wolsey and I still giggle about that. I am sure that will happen again, hopefully I will be wittier then.

More changes

Bottom surgery has always been on the table for Wolsey. When he first came out to me he wasn’t sure if he wanted it, but he had asked if I would be ok with. I told him that of course I would be ok with it. He needs to be himself, and we will do whatever needs to be done, take on whatever debt, etc.

iamokwiththis We have talked about it on and off for the last three years as his transitioned occurred. It would fix several problems he has with his original plumbing, but the surgery itself always seemed a little scary and the side effects were worrisome. Also, neither of us considered the plumbing to be indicative of anything non-manly for him.

gaymarriagemanly

Fast forward to this year with the election of Trump and Pence everything is changing. Already they are trying to rip the ACA down, which is partially why we even have coverage for his medical. We talked with our insurance and on top of that they are merging with a bigger insurance plan so we are unsure the future there.

merger

With Pence announcing he wants to rollback coverage, and the fact that we work for such a conservative (DoD) means if it does happen, it will happen to us. Combine this with more research has uncovered side effects are not as common as we originally saw and Wolsey is doing fine from the prior surgeries.pence All of these has caused the conversation to come up again. Wolsey asked me a few days ago if I would be ok with it. I told him I have no issue at all, to do what he needs to. Heck, even if I get any weird hang-ups that is my problem to work through (no hang-ups that I know of though, just FYI). I do not anticipate any issues at all though.

With what appears to be pretty dark four years, or more coming down the road we decided to just do it now. We are hoping to miss any changes in healthcare by getting it done before those changes can be finalized in law.

repeal-aca

We contacted the transgender surgery contact from when he had his chest surgery. Rayleen, the kindest lady ever, explained what we needed to do and how to go about it. It sounds like Wolsey needs to get 2 psych approvals (we could do it without approvals if we paid cash), then we fly down to Scottsdale Arizona for a consult, then get on the wait list for surgery for what sounds like a 6-8 month wait, then we will fly down for a surgery, come up, and then a month or two later go down for a second surgery depending on what options Wolsey wants to go with.

This means you folks all get to read about the upcoming surgery, more anxiety and stress, but also a lot more happiness as Wolsey realizes even more of who he is.

Background Radiation 1/13/17

This is my weekly roundup of the background radiation I am exposed to. It’s usually the bad and ugly of how the world treats LGBT folks, with a heavier emphasis on the T’s. I like to leave the full links exposed because then you can see where the article is.

I am a big news consumer, and these are just a small sampling of what’s been going down in the past week.

Background Radiation

This week is heartbreaking, and we have some transgender deaths. It’s a sad state of affairs that this isn’t shocking.

Here are the four deaths from the news. I used Pink News for all of these because there are not a lot of news sources that specifically report transgender deaths at all, or without misgendering the dead.

Mesha Caldwell age 41, Died 1/4/17
Headline: Transgender make-up artist shot dead
http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/01/06/transgender-make-up-artist-shot-dead/amp/

Headline: Trans woman shot to death in Virginia misgendered in early reports

Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow age 28, Found on 1/6/17
Headline: Two-spirit transgender woman in South Dakota is the second victim of trans murder in 2017
http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/01/08/two-spirit-transgender-woman-in-south-dakota-is-the-second-victim-of-trans-murder-in-2017/

Sean Ryan Hake age 23, Died 1/6/17
Headline: A trans man has been killed in a police shooting
http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/01/09/a-trans-man-has-been-killed-in-a-police-shooting/

Here’s a few other links that are horrible, but I wanted to give respect to the dead first.

Headline: Senate Takes Major Step Toward Repealing Obamacare
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/senate-takes-major-step-toward-repealing-obamacare

This is a major deal for transgender people. The ACA (Obamacare) provided unequivocal protections for transgender people. By dismantling the ACA, some of those protections will not be in place.

So many of us got legitimate insurance covered care in 2015 and onward. I saw people that had waited decades, suddenly get top surgery and hysterectomies, fully covered. Testosterone covered by insurance?! Amazing. Now that is in jeopardy.

Headline: NO GOOD, VERY BAD BIGOTS DO EXACTLY WHAT THEY PROMISED THEY WOULD DO, FILE ANTI-TRANS BATHROOM BALLOT INITIATIVE
http://seattlish.com/post/155637990966/no-good-very-bad-bigots-do-exactly-what-they

Finding good local blogs are so necessary these days, when big media coverage doesn’t often even touch on local initiatives and ballot issues. This blog is all about Washington State, with a focus on Seattle. I have no idea how they do it, but they are always ahead of the news on these things.

This in particular is how bigots in my state want to file another anti-transgender ballot initiative. if you are in Washington state, keep an eye on this shit. Washington has a good history of bouncing these, but we have to be vigilant because these people never stop trying.

The last two weeks have been filled with bad news above and beyond what I normally get, so I’m out. I’m going to schedule this post, go read the next Whyborne & Griffin gay romance Lovecraftian detective novel, and pretend tomorrow is going to be better.

More work stuff.

I should quit assuming most conservative people are capable of logical thought. Maybe they aren’t nice people, maybe they have repugnant views, but at least in the workplace they should keep it to themselves.

admityoura-dumbass
Thursday another uncomfortable conversation come up. It started innocently enough when we were talking about the Holman Rule and how people will start getting targeted by the conservative lawmakers. That is when a conservative coworker pushed our Titanic of a conversation directly into an iceberg.

The coworker, let’s call him Dave, may be a member of a church that may rhyme with the initials of LDS. He has always been civil about Wolsey’s transition when he found out. He has never said a bad word and refers to us as spouses without blinking. It became obvious he was annoyed that most of the office doesn’t like Trump, so he voiced what was wrong with Trump?

We gave him the normal responses that don’t need to be repeated about Trump. The conversation for this went as to be expected. He then brought up Pence and I explained that is even worse. Pence is experienced, has allies and can actual make lasting change. He asked why I had such an obvious dislike for the man, and I told him about Pence’s opinion on gay conversion therapy, same sex laws, etc. Dave was pretty supportive of same sex marriage being legal, no gay conversion, etc.

Then I mentioned that Pence is also in favor of trans-bathroom laws. Dave, without stopping for a beat to consider his words, chimed in “I am ok with that”. The whole area got quiet. He looked confused as most of the people walked off. I just walked back to my cubicle so I didn’t say something I would regret.

It was awkward.

A few minutes later he IM’ed me over the network and asked if he could clarify that he meant. I already had some tea and had calmed down so I said that would be ok. I knew I would probably regret this, but I figured I should give him a shot. He then went into detail that for the safety of his daughter was what drove him.

It was a ten-minute explanation, with an in-depth discussion on his part about the dangers of children and predators. My first response was to address the fact that no trans person I have heard of has ever molested a child in the bathroom.  I tried to explain to him I guarantee women would not want to share a bathroom with a trans guy and I would more worry about the safety of a transwoman in a male bathroom.

He danced around the subject a bit more before I asked if we should have a separate bathroom for GOP congressmen, priests and others like that. He deflected and seemed unable to understand why I didn’t agree with him. He was getting a bit edgy, his daughter was in danger, and he was sure someone might molest her. Then I responded.

“So you are saying that Wolsey should use the ladies bathroom”.

There was silence on the other end for several minutes. It was a deafening silence on the IM screen. I wondered if he even was there or if he had left.

He eventually responded that Wolsey wasn’t the same. He would never have guessed Wolsey was trans, and wasn’t at all offended that Wolsey used a guy’s bathroom. After all, Wolsey looks like a guy. There was nothing wrong with that.

I then gave a tirade of his not only intolerance to all women using the “female” bathrooms but his misogynistic basing what someone can do on their looks. A woman is a woman no matter what she looks like. This doesn’t even address the type of misogyny that only women needed to be protected.

The conversation went back and forth for an hour. Eventually though he had mellowed and said he had to think about it now after we talked. It was probably for the best because my skin was starting to get pretty thin. In fact even now I am so annoyed by that conversation that I don’t really want to go into detail on what he said. It just makes me so angry.

thin-skinned

I know I should be happy that he may be thinking about the subject. I understand that sometimes people have to know a minority person to gain an understanding of why something is important, but this subject should be so basic that it doesn’t deserve a conversation. I am starting to not really care about “educating” some of these people and instead just telling them to shut up and just be a human.
